Tim Burton at the helm and Danny Elfman conducting the soundtrack. The dynamic duo that made Batman, The nightmare before christmas, Edward Scissorhand and Sleepy hollow.
The story revolves around a dying father and his son, who is trying to learn more about his dad by piecing together the stories he has gathered over the years. The son winds up re-creating his father’s elusive life in a series of legends and myths inspired by the few facts he knows. Through these tales, the son begins to understand his father’s great feats and his great failings.
A classic Burton movie which includes freaks and people extraordinary who play a big role in the father`s tale. The point behind it all is that every person re-creates its own life story the way it suits him/her. These are not lies but more of an interpretation, covered by the dust of time. What one remembers of his/hers own experiences is as truthful as it gets, since nobody knows better. Who cares if the tales include giants, a big fish, bank robbers turn stock brokers, witches who can predict the future with their glass eyes and so forth. Life is what you make of it.
The storytelling is great, filled with known faces from Danny de Vito, Steve Buscemi to Helena Bonham Carter and Ewan McGregor, and in general it`s a classic Tim Burton fantasy. Which either means that you will fall for it or you`ll feel that you`ve been cheated. Believe the lies or call him a liar.
